My second maternity shoot (the first was my wife’s), and really my first paid shoot all around that wasn’t done for friends. My experience is somewhat limited in regards to portraiture, but I was excited despite my apprehensions. I actually arrived a few minutes late. NOT cool with me. The clients, also clients of my wife’s doula business Chara Doula, didn’t seem to mind all that much. They were utterly cool.

I surveyed the area, Memorial Park in Jacksonville, briefly as I walked in with my assistant (my wife) and thought for sure we would get some good photos. It took a moment to get comfortable, but the clients seemed very kind and willing to take our instruction. Early on I did some test shots to get things set up on the camera. Then we got moving. I’m still here and I am awake! I know I haven’t blogged in a while. It’s been too long, but I have been busy. Things are crazy as they always are at this time of year. You see, my family and I are Christians that keep the Sabbaths, holy days, and feasts as outlined in the law of God. In the several weeks leading up to each feast season things always get hectic. It doesn’t matter which feast really. Passover, Pentecost, or the Feast of Booths. Things get busy. They get crazy. They get hectic. Sometimes even strange.

For a long time I’ve wanted to learn to do panoramic photos. I gave it a couple shots a year or two ago, but I’ll be honest here, they were downright awful. I didn’t use a tripod and I didn’t have my exposure locked so they shot at different exposures leaving some really ugly bands. You can see in the photo below that the stitching software I used (PhotoStitch) to merge the photos together didn’t do a very good job either as there are some jagged spots.

I went out yesterday morning as I had no reason to go into work (thanks to the economy) and I gave it another shot. I have been wanting to do this photo for a good while now as there is a pretty nice view across the Trout River from Lem Turner. I woke up earlier than normal, got dressed, grabbed my gear, and away I went walking down the street. I was stoked that I was up before the sun for the first time in quite a while. It’s no small feat for me. Since I was a kid I’ve always been the sleep-in type. For some reason I just get my best sleep in those last few hours of the morning when I need to be getting up. I’m more of a night owl and always have been. The difference now is that I used to stay up to watch movies or some other time-wasting activity like eating peanut butter sandwiches or nachos, which as we all know is not very healthy, but that’s another story.

This time I used Photoshops automate > photomerge function to merge the photos together. In this pano I have taken 4 photos. I merged them in Photoshop as I just stated and just left it on the automatic setting to allow it to choose which method on its own. I figured that would be a good starting place. It did a swell job. I really can’t tell where the stitch seams are. Someone with more experience with panoramic photos or a better eye might be able to see it, but I don’t. Of course I see about as good as a bat.

Sunrise Over the Trout River Panorama

I did a few minor adjustments after that and uploaded it to my facebook page. I later downloaded GIMP for Mac and cropped it to what you see above and made one other minor adjustment to the saturation. I think this is so much better than my previous attempt. Don’t you?

Now to get back to Stinson Park and redo that first one because I love that view!

Defining Moment in the Life of a Parent

Ever since I can remember I have had an aversion to doctors. I have never liked taking medicine or having some stranger poke and prod my body. I am older now and I know that sometimes it is necessary. I accept that fact, albeit reluctantly.

Early on my wife and I took our kids to the doctor for every little thing and fed them the prescribed meds like the good little parents we were supposed to be. After 4 years or so we began researching more about health and took a turn from conventional to “alternative”. We started eating healthier and going to doctors less. We went through several years barely visiting the doctors office at all. Years passed and we were granted more and more understanding about our health and the medical industry in general.

The Most Important Part of Your Marketing Plan: Your Product

It goes without saying that your product is the most important part of your marketing plan. Maybe not so much in the short term, but long term to be sure, at least when you are marketing a retail product.

I work in an engineering office in Jacksonville where it matters short term as well. Our service is civil consulting and engineering. Our product is a set of civil construction plans. Lots of eyeballs see those plans. Our clients, city/county/state review personnel, surveyors, other engineers and drafters, print houses, even courier drivers. I want any plans I draft to look as good as they can; clean and clear so the reviewers don’t go cross-eyed looking at them. I have seen plans get denied several times by reviewers by and large because they simply weren’t clear. They were messy and convoluted; sloppy. In my early days I did my best, but I didn’t realize the importance of a clean set of construction plans until I actually did a subdivision where I really put my heart into them. I made sure everything was as aesthetically pleasing as possible. That set of plans got approved “as noted” in one submittal and my outlook on the work I do was forever changed. (Unfortunately, we later found that the client had cleared their land without a permit which caused a major hiccup with the project, especially since they counted a portion of it as wetlands. BIG NO NO. We still got things fixed.)

If you are a draftsman like me (or another type of drafter; architectural, mechanical, survey…) remember this. People see the plans you draft. Lots of people. It speaks volumes not only for the company you represent, but also for you personally, to do the best you can on the plans you put together. Straighten up those crooked leaders and be sure to spell check every note. Be sure your company logo is on every sheet you’re responsible for. Make it look good. Don’t forget, clean and clear; concise and to the point. Leave no room for questions. You will make the reviewers happy which in turn will make your boss happy.

For others always bear in mind that the product (or service) you offer must be the best you can provide. If it’s not you’re doing the wrong thing. Get out now and find a product you will put 100% of your heart into. You should always seek to improve your product to the best of your abilities. With my cad drafting and my photography I’m always learning new things. My product improves steadily over time. I admit I still have those days where my heart is just not in it. No biggie. I sit out for a few plays and wait for my heart to kick back into gear. I get back up and hit it hard. Perseverance is key for those times when you are in a slump.

No matter what you offer, make it good.

Another aspect of marketing that is of vital importance: customer service. How do you deal with your customers? Do you always approach them with a positive attitude? Even when they are being a $#@!? That brings me to another topic I’ll cover in the near future. Professionalism.

aside

I’ll be doing another video soon to elaborate on the comment in the first video about my desire to be independent. For years that has been my primary goal in life and I am now working towards it along with my wife and kids. Exciting times! Stay tuned!
